STANDING ROOM ONLY
STANDING ROOM ONLY
The opening scene is in a tube. The boat camera and slow-motion editing lead the viewer deep into the tube. As the title suggests, the series of tube rooms allows you to enter while standing, and defines tube surfing as the ultimate form of surfing. Interviews with Laurie Russell, BK, Sean Thomson, and others accurately express the wild era. The film continues with the best of Oahu's North Shore, including Gerry Lopez of Pipeline, Sean Thomson of Off the Wall, a young Michael Ho, and Larry Bertleman of Sunset. It also includes a tube session at a right-handed point break on the east coast of Australia, a legendary Bells Beach contest in 1975, and Mark Richards' Hawaii. The session in which Lopez talks about how "Ala Moana in the 70s was the beginning of the shortboard revolution" is also interesting. Many of the points were shown for the first time at the time, and Mark Warren and others took a step ahead in terms of adventure by hitting long tubes and long, maneuverable waves at Scorpion Bay in Mexico.
