Amidst the rise of counterculture symbolized by hippies and flower power in the late 1960s, the Grateful Dead, along with Jefferson Airplane, became a symbol of the movement in San Francisco, its epicenter.

Formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1965 and disbanded in 1995. Their music was known for its roots-oriented approach characterized by a "loose" feel.
