During the rise of counterculture symbolized by hippies and flower power in the late 1960s, the Grateful Dead, along with Jefferson Airplane, became symbols of the movement in San Francisco, which was the center of that movement.

Formed in Palo Alto, California in 1965 , the band disbanded in 1995. Their musical style was known for its roots-oriented, laid- back style.
